Our Donors ...

We want to start to acknowledge our first donor. He is Ray our weekend volunteer for his $200 contribution to help us move along with our expansion construction. Many, many thanks Ray...

His donation will allow us to purchase side windows that will flank the outdoor to the room.

You too can be mentioned. Just go back to our home page to find out how YOU can be a part of our expansion program and partner with us.

August-Sept. Arrivals ...

Over the past two months we have taken in a great group of birds. Some with NO names (of course we have named them now...) one other with a severe feather problem that required extensive medical attention and others who just needed our love and attention and a place to call home.

Here is our current list of new arrivals for this month:

* 4 Beautiful parakeets: the group name is The Keet Mesiter Family.

* 1 Normal Grey Cockatiel: Petie a.k.a. PDQ

* 3 Lovebirds (2 Fisher 1 Peach Face) Names are: Kiowa; Aerial; Shay.

* 1 Pied Lovebird Named: Mango

* 3 Parakeets Named: Jasper; Shasta; Sierra. A.K.A. The Keet Kids

* 2 Parrots (Both 27 years old) Named: Arnold & Tootsie

* 1 Bare Eyed (who required the extensive medical attention) Named: Geiger. And our very warm “thank you” to our Avian Vets -- Drs. Goshert & Pollard at Union Hills Animal Clinic for their wonderful work and expertise in putting Geiger back together. He is doing remarkably well....and he does talk and says his name.

* Pair of Lovebirds Named: Twiggy & Ziggy....together with 2 pairs of Parolettes (not yet named). Thank you to Lori and Joe at JD Birds Etc for calling on The Feathered Nest to help provide these little guys a happy home. We are very pleased to help.

One other main event happened here over the past 4 weeks and we’ll write about Cactus Jack the Senegal in just a few days once we load his photo up onto the site.....you’ll want to read about him....

We would like to welcome into The Feathered Nest, as of April 14. 2005, two new arrivals... 2 wonderful Senegal Parrots, named Splinter (12 y/o) and Salsa (6 y/o).

We thank Mark in Tempe for coming to The Feathered Nest to take care of these two for the rest of their natural life. They will now become permanent residents of The Feathered Nest.

NOTE: Since this writing, Splinter & Salsa have been placed into a loving, caring home.

New Project Under Way ...

A new project we are undertaking here, is the locating of several acres (about 20) to develop into a “final resting place” not only for our feathered family members, but other small pets as well. We are taking information now on any type of vacant property donation within the Greater Phoenix area.

Simply give us a call or e-mail us with your information.

More on this project as we move forward. We will keep you all posted of our progress.

Do Something Special

While you're sitting in your comfortable chair and watching the silly antics of your bird,  think about doing somethng "special" for him/her.

Celebrate the birds "birthday" with a special treat or new toy. New toys are always a welcomed item in the bird cage. Keeps them alert and not bored with the same old stuff.

Read a good book on "other"types of birds that may interest you. Those that you would think could live in harmony with you and your special birds.

Keep regular grooming schedules with your vet. A good home "spray" bath is always welcomed and refreshing, but don't forget about their wings and nails. These too must be trimmed from time to time.

Take "home pictures". Wether it be color photos or videos. Frame  all photos and put into a scrapbook and that will be a treasure that will last a life time.

"Volunteer" at a bird rescue or adoption facility. Just one hour of your time  a week can make a big difference in  a bird's life.

Thanks ...

Bird Watching Service Available

The Feathered Nest offersbird sitting service.

This service will be for people who need to have their birds taken care of while they go away for a few days or on vacation or have to take care of other family matters. This service applies ONLY to those with birds.

The service will range in the area of $8 - $22 per day ... depending on the size of the bird(s). We propose to have at least a minimum of 2 visits per day, along with some  basic cage cleaning, and freshening of water and food bowls. If need be, arrangements can be made (no extra cost) to have the birds brought to The FeatheredNest, but  the sitting service will be right in the owners own home.

More information can be obtained by e-mailing The Feathered Nest or calling and leaving a message at: 623.516.8102.

Yellowhead102

We want to say "thank you" to our friends at Petsmart for assisting us in the pick up of two conures that were dropped off at their store with no where to  go. We do not have any information on them, other than one may be 4 years old and the other about 1 year old. One is a Green Cheek Conure and the other is an Orange Fronted Conure. We have no idea what their  names are, so we have re-named them as Pasta (4 yr. old) and Rio (1 yr. old). Again "thank you" to our friends at Petsmart at Frank Lloyd Wright Blvd./Scottsdale.

For Our Military Personnel

The Feathered Nest is proud to offer to ALL service personnel who have been called upon to serve our country ... an extended version of our Bird Watching/Sitting Care service.

For those who have birds that will need attention while you are on leave, no matter how long, The FeatheredNest will provide our Bird Watching/Sitting Care Service to all military personnel at NO  Charge.

If you have to leave and have birds that will need attention and care, let us know, we will be here to help. Our number is: 623.516.8102.

Pets & Apartments ...

Not all pet owners are homeowners. And trying to find an apartment that will allow a dog or cat, can become a problem. One nice thing of owning a "bird" is that it can be  a small bird. Like a finch or lovebird, a cockatiel or even a Green Cheek Conure.

Here in the Phoneix area, as well as Tucson ... we have found a web site that can help pet owners find that "pet-friendly" apartment.  They have a web site at: www.peoplewithpets.com and has listings of over 60 metro areas that include Phoenix & Tucson.

So if you're having trouble finding a home not only for yourself, but for the pet, try the website. It should give you some good information. Besides. If they don't allow dogs or cats, then that finch, lovebird or cockatiel should work out even better. But first, ask the manager. And be sure to tell them, it is a caged bird and wings are trimmed for safety and health reasons. This will always make it easier to get that special  place of yours.

First Aid Kit ...

Any household or aviary, should have a basic "first aid kit" on hand for those cuts and little accidents.

Ours here at The Fethered Nest is simple, but effective. Here are just a few of the items within our bird first aid kit:

  • Q-tips/cotton balls
  • Small jar of Kwik-Stop Styptic Powder
  • Small bag of basic "flour"
  • Proper size nail clippers
  • Clean teri-cloth towels/Paper towels (white)

These items may seem basic to you, but they are life savers when it comes to the accidents that sometimes occur in the house/aviary.

The small bag of "flour" works the same way as the Kwik Stop powder. It helps clot the blood should you accidently trim nails down too far or should the bird(s) get a scratch that bleeds. (However ... the best first aid here is that wings should be trimmed  to help prevent flight accidents and bleeding).

And the clean towels are used for sanitary reasons. Of course, should you have an accident with large, massive bleeding, wrap the injured bird up in a clean  towel and head over to your avian vet right away.

Did You Know ...

Birds played a role in aerial warfare during WW I. Because of their acute hearing, PARROTS were kept on the Eiffel Tower to warn of approaching aircraft long before the planes were heard or seen by human spotters.
